How to Order Food in Thai (Without Reading the Menu)

Two words order anything in Thailand: ขอ khǎw — may I have — and อันนี้ an-níi — this one.

Point at a photo, a pot, or someone else's plate, say khǎw an-níi, and food arrives. You never have to read a word of Thai script to eat well here.

an-níi is the most powerful word a beginner owns

That is not an exaggeration. A zero-Thai traveler with an-níi and a finger can order from a picture menu, a glass cabinet of curries, a cart with no menu at all, or the thing the man at the next table is eating. It sidesteps every vocabulary gap at once.

Hold up two fingers with it and you've ordered two. Put khǎw in front and you've been polite about it.

khǎw is the polite request for anything

khǎw isn't only for food. It is the standard front end for "may I have" — the bill, a spoon, a bag, another beer, the WiFi password. Whenever you want to ask for a thing rather than demand it, khǎw goes at the front and khráp or khâ goes at the end. Everything in between can be a pointed finger.

One boundary worth knowing: khǎw is for asking to receive something. Asking someone to do something — carry this, wait here, call a taxi — is a different pattern in Thai, and you don't need it yet.

Do I need to ask for a menu?

เมนู mee-nuu is menu, borrowed from English and instantly understood. Worth having, though plenty of the best places in Thailand don't have one — a cart cooks four things and you can see all four.

Two words for how the meal is going

อร่อย à-ràwy means delicious, and saying it to the person who cooked your food is one of the small, high-value things a visitor can do. It costs nothing and it genuinely lands.

อิ่ม ìm means full — pleasantly, comfortably full — and it's how you decline the extra plate without insulting anyone. หิว hǐu is its opposite, hungry, and it is how you tell a friend where the conversation should go next.

The one habit worth building

Order one thing at a time. Thai food arrives when it's ready, not in courses, and a table that orders six dishes at once gets six dishes at once. Order two, eat, then order more with khǎw and a point. It's how locals eat and the food is better for it.
